A possible Microsoft & VMware solution
Competitors in the software industry, Microsoft and VMware are in discussions to join forces in the cloud where each shines in its field: Azure for virtualization and Microsoft for its 500 million customers worldwide and its private data centers.
VMware and Microsoft will work together to develop a solution to facilitate the migration of VMware applications to Azure, according to The Information. The potential partnership is based on the VMware Cloud on AWS offering.
Towards better market shares
The VMware Cloud on AWS offer has made AWS a cloud of choice for the many companies that have a virtual environment based on VMware and want to move forward with their migration to the cloud. According to The Information, VMware and Microsoft are working on developing a solution that will facilitate the migration of VMware applications to Azure. In a cloud market widely represented by AWS, this alliance would aim to challenge Azure and thus gain market share and get ever closer to the leader.
A necessary reconciliation
It is however essential to note that Microsoft has confronted VMware with its Hyper-V hypervisor, by launching its own migration service for VMware applications and environments in Azure at the end of 2017, without VMware's prior consent.
