Gartner discussed IT trends for 2020 at the Symposium/ITxpo held from the 16th to the 20th of October in Orlando. 10 points are highlighted.
We will have to prepare for a rapid adoption of augmented reality, the decline of mobile apps and an increase in voice exchanges, to the detriment of web browsing.
1. NEXT In 2020, 100 million people will make purchases using augmented reality.
Augmented reality should "overlay the data" according to Gartner analyst Daryl Plummer. That way, when we walk into a supermarket, we will be able to see information about the products "floating in the air" above them.
Online shopping should also benefit from augmented reality.
2. In 2020, we will share more with robots than with our spouses
In 2020, 30% of web browsing sessions will be without screens. Nevertheless, this is a matter of debate. Certainly after Gartner's presentation, Aren Cambre, who leads a research team on Internet technologies at Southern Methodist University. "So far, all data representations have been designed for visual display," he added, but it is not yet clear how this non-visual interaction will work to use the services. "For example, how will a student "see" his grades with Alexa? Or how will he authenticate himself? These are some of the important questions that need to be answered.
3. In 2019, 20% of brands will abandon their mobile applications
"The applications will no longer serve as first-class marketing support for leading brands," said Daryl Plummer. "Already, the apps have not met the expectations of companies," he added. "In addition, application shops are full of apps, and it is very difficult to find a truly exceptional or indispensable app. Finally, the cost remains even higher than the profit. "Companies will be turning more to the mobile Web or using "Progressive Web Apps", similar to what Google is doing. "When the user connects to a website from a mobile device, the mobile client downloads a framework, and the next time he connects, the app will work instantly," explained Daryl Plummer. Updates will be automatic. The Apps are not going to disappear, but "we are somehow entering a post-app era," he added.
4. companies will use algorithms that aim to "provide constructive support to the billions of employees around the world
These systems will function as a virtual assistant, but will use behavioral and psychological knowledge to help employees make appropriate decisions.
5. By 2022, the value of a blockchain service company will exceed $10 billion
Blockchain, a public register of financial transactions, will improve and promote the development of "major Community exchange operations". Because it contributes to increasing transparency and trust in transactions, blockchain technology will promote the development of large "ecosystems". It will also be used by business networks.
6. By 2021, 20% of all individual activities will involve at least one of the top seven IT giants
The companies in question are Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, for the United States, and Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent, for China. This means that consumers will depend, more than ever, on the services of large IT companies. They will be as essential as public utilities.
